Things That Don’t Suck About Winter.

I am not a fan of winter.

Give me a beach or a pool to lay beside, a big floppy sunhat, a pair of sunglasses, and a big stack of books and magazines (and sunscreen, of course). And I am one happy camper.

If this scene happened to take place in Mexico with a fruity alcoholic drink in my hand…even better.

I was saying earlier in the week that I’ve been feeling a touch of the Winter blues lately. And judging from what other people have been telling me, I’m not the only one.

So while we’re rapidly approaching Spring (March starts tomorrow) I thought I would list some Winter positives to get us through the next couple of weeks. Yes, it’s snowy and the days are short but…some things about it don’t suck.

1. Babies in Snowsuits.

Chubby baby in a chubby snowsuit? Easily, the most adorable thing on the planet.

Or you know…just funny.

2. Dogs in Sweaters.

Same logic as number 1.

Picture stolen from Allison – it’s her dog, Charlie. I can’t even handle him.

Too flippin adorable!

3. Scarves.

Functional and cute. And very winter-appropriate.

4. Hot food.

Gone are summer salads and raw veggies. In winter, all I want is soup, stews, chilis, and casseroles. And hot, melty sandwiches.

Last night’s tuna melt dinner: tuna, salt, pepper, dill, paprika, a bit of olive oil mayo, and artichoke and spinach hummus with a mix of cheddar and mozzarella on top. Amazing.

Winter kind of makes me want to put melt-y cheese on everything.

5. Chocolate.

Not that it isn’t acceptable any other time of the year, but it feels awesome to huddle under a blanket on a cold night with a bar of chocolate and an awesome movie. Amiright?

6. Vacations.

Whether you’re pulling a ski vacation like this girl, or a tropical Hawaiian like this one, winter always seems to be the best time for a getaway. Not that this is applying to me anytime soon, but I can live vicariously through you guys, right?

7. Unexpected warmth.

You know those days when it’s just a few degrees warmer than normal? I LIVE for those days in winter. You step outside and you’re cold, but you’re not as cold as you were a few days before…just awesome.

8. Hot beverages.

Coffee, tea, hot chocolate…whatever you like. Whenever it’s cold out and someone hands you a steaming hot beverage, you can’t help but be ridiculously grateful.

So…I’m going to try to keep these in mind for the next few weeks while I wait for Spring. Although frankly, the sooner, the better!

Have a good one!

  1. Tropical vacation. I would rather go somewhere warm any day. I live somewhere cold I don’t want to spend my vacation somewhere even colder! But I really want to meet Charlie. That dog is going to be famous someday, I just know it. Such a cutie. I could totally curl up with him while drinking some hot chocolate. He’s a heartbreaker.

  2. Ski vacation! The cold is rough and I whine about the gray days…but I whine even more in the heat and humidity haha. Just wait till summer…you’ll smack me to shush! Babies in snowsuits, scarves, hot food, and chocolate are all excellent things to enjoy about winter….Charlie, too 🙂 I ❤ him!

  3. Tropical vacation! I am a beach lover!! However, I would make rather live in California where the weather is hot, but dry. NY summers are so hot and humid. My hair and humidity are not friends haha.

  4. Love this post, Sam…although it’s making me miss winter SO much! You covered all my favorite parts about the cold but I’ll say it again: winter wardrobe, cupping a hot drink, stews, watching movies indoors, good hair days, hot showers, and clear skin :)! It really is about perspective and even though you can’t change the weather, it’s inspiring to see you shifting your attitude! Please enjoy the cold for both of us!

  5. Ohhh, I’m definitely feeling you on the winter blues big time. This year has been especially hard for whatever reason, so I’m really hoping that a nice tropical vacation will help pull me out of the SADs… It’s not that I even mind the cold so much, but the lack of sunshine just kills me after a while. Good thing th days are already getting longer and warmer though. And some other good things? Christmas. Scarves. Boots. Cozy evenings by the fireplace. Snowboarding. And comfort food. But… even with all those, I’d still rather summer, thank you very much 😛

  6. Yahoo for putting some positivity in Winter, I’m struggling to get through so keeping an eye on what is good about it helps! I’m going on vacation in 8 days so that’s keeping me sane! As for things I love about Winter, can we add cozying up on the couch with a blanket & a magazine. Also hot beverages — steaming cups of coffee & tea get a vote in my book!

  7. amen to dogs in sweaters. and hot food. and hot drinks. I have to say though the winter brings out the grinch in me. I try and hold it together but sometimes I just can’t stand the cold.

  8. Tropical vacation for me! But, to be honest I’m not a hugeee fan of either. For one, I’m super clumsy so skiing is just out of the question ha. On the other, I’m the palest thing around town, so tropics + me doesn’t equal the best of times ever. I just like getting out of the cold!
I never really feel Winter blues, and I kind of love the Winter time! I always try to appreciate what each season brings, even though I may be craving Spring just a tad now.
I love that you put a positive spin on Winter! I think a lot of people could use it now that we’re kind of in the middle of the seasons!

    • Oh believe me, I would challenge you for the palest in town title – tropical vacations for me are accompanied with an insane amount of sunscreen.

And that’s what I’m going for! Seems like everyone I talk to about it is experiencing some form of winter blues, so I’m trying to bring about some positivity to survive us the next couple of weeks.

  9. Awesome post and very much needed! I have been down in the dumps about this winter weather lately, but I guess it really isn’t ALL bad! I especially love #2. I seriously cannot get over how cute little Charlie is!!

  10. Tropical vacation!! I hate winter but I so love hot soups, hot chocolate and tea and the simplicity of warm and easy crock pot soups

  11. Tropical all the way – I love to feel warm! Although you’re right abut hot drinks, I don’t know how I’ll deal with my coffee obsession when it is too warm (hang on, I live in England… That won’t be a problem)

  12. I’m not a fan of winter either! The cold just makes me miserable. Thank goodness we can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel… although now that you’ve reminded me about some of the good things about winter, I might be okay if it hangs around for a bit longer. 😛 Hearty comfort-food meals are definitely one of my favourite things about winter. And Christmas! 😀

  13. Coffees are the best in the winter – I love that McDonalds are doing free coffee now and that Tim Hortons are doing roll up the rim!
