Weekend Eats and Experiments in Kombucha.


Good morning! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!

Mine was pretty quiet – it’s the weekend before Easter and I have a lot to do school-wise considering that it’s end of semester. So an easy weekend around the house it was.

After I got home from my morning of grocery shopping Saturday, I finished off the last of the buffalo tofu I made earlier in the week on an arugula salad with peppers, baby carrots and a spoonful of caramelized onion hummus. One of the last chunks of my Irish soda bread on the side.


Saturday afternoon consisted of a quick trip to the gym for an ab workout and a quick HIIT run on the treadmill and getting some homework done. I also did a bit of Easter decorating, because apparently I like to decorate for every holiday.

So fun fact: at one of the Christmas parties I went to in December, I decided that I really liked the table centerpiece. So, I took it home with me.


It is a ginormous, gold-painted branch with a bunch of icicle decorations on it. You know what’s awkward? Trying to carry that inconspicuously across a parking lot. In the middle of winter. Wearing a short dress and tall shoes. And getting into a limo. But totally worth it because it looks gorgeous and fills the empty spot on my stair landing perfectly.

And…I redecorated it. Easter-style.


Tacky? Probably. But I love it. Open-mouthed smile

But, the most important part of my day was dinner.

My seaweed salad…it was a bigger portion than I was expecting, which is never a bad thing!


My rainbow roll ( california roll with salmon, tuna, red snapper, white tuna and avocado) and Eric’s black dragon roll (dynamite roll with eel and avocado)


Eric’s AK47: deep fried roll with salmon, crab, avocado, fish roe and spicy sauce.


My Odessa roll: avocado and eel topped with salmon and avocado. Easily my favourite roll!

And dessert:


Yogurty’s, I freakin’ love you.

I’ve got:

  • a mix of peppermint white chocolate, chocolate coconut, and caramel popcorn froyo (I can’t even. They were all amazing)
  • chopped Reese’s
  • peanut butter chips
  • frosted animal crackers
  • sprinkles
  • cinnamon toast crunch


And now I think I need a box of cinnamon toast crunch. That is my childhood cereal right there.


Tasty breakfast to start my morning:


Yup. In a jar.


Banana oats topped with blueberry jam and a bit of Nature’s Path Dark Chocolate and Red Berries granola. Hit the spot for sure.

After breakfast, Eric was running some errands which happened to take him right next to Goodness Me!, the health food store in Brantford. Soooo I invited myself along.


I mean, I had to stock up on my Zevia stash Smile with tongue out I also picked up digestive enzymes (the newest experiment in my quest to fix my stomach) and the Good Bean chickpea snacks in sweet cinnamon. I saw these on Allison’s blog last week and I was intrigued, so when I saw them at the store I decided to give them a shot. They’re pretty good – not too sweet, and they have a good crunch to them.

I also decided to give kombucha a try.


A couple of people recommended it for stomach problems, so I picked one up. It’s…interesting? I like it, but it took me a little while to get used to the ferment-y flavour. Not something I’d pick up too often based on the price tag itself…yikes.


Dinner definitely demonstrated my carnivorous side.


Yes, that steak takes up half my plate. And yes, I ate all of it. To be fair, it’s a much less impressive feat when you take out the bone and all the little fatty chunks. Such a fabulous dinner.

Sunday night was spent watching TV and relaxing – prepping myself for the week ahead. Although, it’s a short week…yay Easter weekend!

  1. OMG love your Easter tree- rather crafty I must say ;)! Your night on Saturday sounds ideal…you can never go wrong with sushi and fro yo! Another winning combo that will undoubtedly always hit the spot is pizza (preferably thin crust) & ice cream!

  3. You had a good weekend! That froyo looks especially delicious. Caramel popcorn froyo? Sounds interesting. You just can’t go wrong with it. Quiet weekends are the best sometimes. Or most of the time, if you’re me. This semester is flying by. I am so ready for it to be over!

  4. I’ve never tried kombucha but I’m very curious to try it. Your sushi takeout looked so good as did the dessert!

    I do love Japanese food followed by a chocolate ice cream depends really how healthy I’m being 🙂 if unhealthy then for dessert I love a good cheese platter.

  6. Tacky?! No way! I love those tree decorations! I’ve been meaning to make a little Easter tree myself, but I need to find a good tree first. And I swear that kombucha has seriously been a lifesaver for me. It’s worked wonders for my stomach, and hefty price tag or not, I still drink it on the regular. I only drink about a third of the bottle a day, though, so it makes it last a little longer!

  10. Yah, the price tag on those things is dangerous! I know everyone swears by it, but my stomach can’t handle kombucha same with ACV. I actually get horrible skin reactions when I drink those two things. No clue why!
    Oh my, I’m kind of jealous of your Easter decor haha, I wish I had a tree to dress it up Easter like;)
    That would be fun. I think I need an Easter tree now.

  12. Such a neat idea to redecorate your Christmas tree for Easter and a cute one at that. Tacky? There is no such thing when it comes to seasonal decorations :). Did you put up any others in your place? I’m always curious to see how others decorate their homes for the holidays.

  14. Yup, I agree, sushi and fro yo is pretty much the best combination ever. Also I wish there was a sushi place near me with that Odessa roll on the menu – that is so much awesomeness all crammed into one roll!

    I didn’t really like kombucha the first time I tried it, but it’s grown on me. It all depends on the flavour too. I’m a big fan of the GT’s Third Eye Chai flavour!

  15. Umm, I’m in LOVE with your Easter tree!! So adorable, and definitely worth the awkward high-heeled walk across the parking lot in the snow. I want one of my own! 🙂 Where did you find those cute dangling chicks?

    The sushi looks amazing, and it’s further strengthened my insatiable cravings for raw fish and avocado this week. Don’t tell anyone, but I ate it again today! Is it possible to OD? Yeah, I think it is. Tomorrow all of my meat WILL be cooked.

    I’m pretty positive that it would have been impossible to have filled your froyo bowl with better toppings! Chopped Reese’s, peanut butter chips, sprinkles, cinnamon toast crunch AND frosted animal crackers? Yum. Speaking of frosted animal crackers…they were my favorite cookie (cracker?) growing up, and I really miss them!

  16. Holy mother of fro-yo!! Caramel popcorn flavor?! AND iced animal crackers?!!?!! Oh man, I was ALL about some iced animal crackers when I was a kid! I could easily polish off an entire box of them in a single summer day! Funny story, I used to take the bag out of the box and carry them around with me as my friends and I were playing outside…one day I was just scooting across my backyard, swinging my bag of sugary delights and the bottom totally busted out! Cookies went FLYING EVERYWHERE! Then, my friend and I about died laughing saying that I had finally “tossed my cookies”! Lol

    And the only thing that can even remotely compare to the sheer bliss of a fro-yo cup full of that much deliciousness? SUSHI! I agree, best dinner/dessert combo ever! And I swear there is something about the combo of eel, salmon, and avocado that makes me weak in the knees! And I would NEVER turn down a hefty portion of seaweed salad…I swear the servings they usually have are so tiny!

    I love love LOVE the story about the tree! The visual I’m getting is all kinds of hilarious! And I personally think the Easter decor looks FABULOUS! 😀

    I love kombucha…but I’ll be honest, it took a WHILE for me to grow to love it! Actually, I gave it up for about a year and was just about convinced that it just wasn’t for me…I liked a few flavors, but I didn’t love them. That was UNTIL I tried the lavender…OMG, now I’m obsessed! I’ve been having some tummy issues lately myself though so I’m glad that I’ve picked up the “old habit”…always seems to do the trick! That and my never-ending supply of ginger chews! 😉
