Happy Christmas Eve!

Oh my goodness, it’s Christmas tomorrow. That hasn’t quite hit me yet…

Fortunately, the cold slowly seems to be dissipating. Here’s hoping it’s completely out of my system! I knew cookies were the cure. Smile with tongue out Although it means I’m going into Christmas with a little bit of a sugar hangover, I’m ok with that. Tis the season, right?

As I stated yesterday, today Eric and I are attending his family Christmas with his mom, his brother and his sister-in-law. Then Christmas day is my family (parents, brother, his girlfriend, and my aunt) followed by my extended family on Boxing Day. It’ll be busy, but I’m so excited to see everyone!

When you move away from home, you really start to appreciate the family time when you can get it. When I was living in London, my mom’s office was 5 minutes away from me, so I could see her every day if I wanted to. Now going for weeks at a time without seeing her or other family members really makes me appreciate holidays that much more.

The Workouts

So today marks the beginning of my two deload weeks. Carrie has put up her Elite Slim and Sculpt program, so I will be purchasing that to start the first Monday of the new year. Until then, I will be enjoying my vacation and giving my muscles a much needed break. For cardio, I won’t be doing anything more strenuous than a walk. I plan on doing some yoga and foam rolling as well – I have the tightest hip flexors AND hamstrings ever. I do yoga for a while and it helps, and then I fall off the bandwagon and I tighten up again. Here’s hoping I can finally stretch them out a bit over the next couple of weeks.

My last week of workouts:

  • Sunday: Phase 3 Workout 1
  • Monday: Upper Body Weights Workout
  • Tuesday: Off
  • Wednesday: Upper Body Weights + 15 minutes elliptical
  • Thursday: off
  • Friday: P90X Cardio Kenpo
  • Saturday: off
  • Sunday: at-home Crossfit workout

At the beginning of the week, I stuck with upper body workouts so I could continue resting my knee. It had stopped bothering me by that point, but I didn’t want to push it. It’s been fine all week, thankfully.

After Wednesday the gym at school closed, so I was stuck with at-home workouts. That’s cool, I can work with those. I used to love kickboxing-type workouts, so Kenpo at home was a lot of fun!

As for yesterday’s workout…I was looking for an at-home workout on my Pinterest Board, when it led me back to this page on Katrina Runs For Food. I decided to give WOD# 6 a try, which was:

7 rounds of:

  • 7 burpees
  • 7 squats
  • 7 situps

After a bit of a warm up, I jumped right in. What did I think?

Holy crap…suddenly, I see why people think Crossfit is so intense. I got the workout done in 6-7 minutes (I didn’t time it) and I’ve never had a workout like that before. Only a few minutes long and I was dying. Yea…wow. I can see why people drink that Kool-Aid!

Dinner

Fortunately, that workout was so short I did it while dinner was is the oven. I wanted to make chicken breasts a little more interesting, so I stuffed them with cheddar and spinach.

Well, fortunately it worked out well. Served with purple sweet potato fries, ketchup, and steamed broccoli.

I hadn’t bought the purple sweet potato fries before, so I was curious to see if they tasted any different from orange ones. I thought they did – less sweet, more starchy.

And now, to bring the Christmas Challenge to an end.

I don’t think I have one tradition that applies specifically to Christmas Eve. I’ll do one thing for a couple of years, than move on to something else. I remember when I was really little my family and I would go to a family friend’s house, than go to church that night. Since then, I’ve gone to various open houses and parties that different friends have had. The plan this year is the same as it was last year, so maybe this is the new Christmas Eve tradition?

I’m likely going to be stepping away from the blog for a few days to enjoy time with my family. Have a fabulous holiday everyone, and I’ll talk to you soon! ❤

At Least I Have Cookies.

So…it’s two days before Christmas. And I feel like crap.

(yes, I am absolutely using my blog today to whine. The benefits of being able to choose content on your blog).

I’m stuffed up to the point of ridiculousness. I’m drinking water and peppermint tea like it’s my job and googling the hell out of “how to cure a stuffed nose.” I tried the inhaling steam thing – it worked a little bit? I’m thinking I may need to try saline drops next. I might be making another trip to the grocery store today.

Ugh. But at least I have cookies.

Here’s the plan of attack for Christmas this year: Eric’s family Christmas Eve, my immediate family Christmas day, and my Dad’s side of the family Boxing Day. Although it’s not a Christmas plan per say, I’ll count it anyways: on Saturday I’m back in town for my cousin’s baby shower. She’s due in February and I am so excited for her!

Survey Saturday: Health Edition.

Happy Saturday! It seems like a good day for a survey so…that’s what I’m doing today. I realize this one was floating around a few weeks ago, but I’m just getting to it now. I can’t even remember who’s all done it…I got it from Lisa, but I remember seeing that a few people have done it. Enjoy!

Health Survey

1. What did you eat for breakfast?

I haven’t eaten breakfast yet, so I’ll go with yesterday’s. I had two open face egg sandwiches on a sandwich thin with cream cheese and strawberry jam. Sunny side up eggs of course…I love runny yolks!

2. How much water do you drink a day?

A lot. I keep a water bottle with me at all times (it’s about 3/4 of a litre) and refill it 3-4 times daily. Gotta stay hydrated!

3. What is your current favourite workout?

We all know how much I enjoy my heavy weights.

4. How many calories do you eat a day?

I don’t count them anymore – I’ve learned that when I know exactly how much I’m eating, it gets my anxiety levels way up. Unfortunately after years of doing it, I usually have a pretty good idea of where I’m at. I’m slowly pushing those numbers out of my head though!

How freakin’ true is this?

5. What are your favourite healthy snacks?

Nut butter from the jar. Cottage cheese and fruit. Green smoothies (spinach, whey protein, frozen banana, almond milk), Greek yogurt and casein protein. Clementines. Ice cream…yea, I’m a snacker.

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

I usually try to leave leftovers for Eric, so my lunches are salads, soup, sandwiches, tofu and veggies…I try to mix it up.

7. What is your favourite body part to train?

My legs! It’s easiest for me to gain strength in my lower body, so I love doing deadlifts, squats, leg press…anything except lunges. I seriously detest those things.

8. What is your least favourite body part to train?

Hard to say, it varies! About 6 months ago I would have said biceps, a few months ago I would have said shoulders…now I’m not sure.

9. What are your ‘bad’ food cravings?

You mean my less nutritious food cravings? I’m definitely doing my best to get away from the good/bad labels. I have a raging sweet tooth, so it kicks in quite often. I need chocolate in some form almost daily.

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?

I sure do! I use whey and casein protein powders, and I take daily multivitamins and fish oil.

11. How often do you eat out?

I absolutely love going out to eat. But due to budget (and the fact that I also enjoy cooking) I try to keep it about once a week.

Especially sushi…sushi has to happen often.

12. Do you eat fast food?

Not often. If I do, it’s Subway 98% of the time. But if a Wendy’s burger happens once in a while, I’m ok with that.

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

Umm…I can’t pick one! My mom is a huge supporter. So is my dad. So is my boyfriend. So is my best friend. So are all of my awesome readers whom I adore so much! I consider myself extremely lucky to have so many supportive people in my life.

14. Do you have a gym membership?

I go to my school gym – because I like free. It’s not the greatest in terms of equipment, but I make do.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

8. If I sleep less, I am an absolute grump. But I can’t seem to sleep more – even if I’m really tired, I try to go to bed at a half decent time otherwise I know I’ll be up ridiculously early.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?

Nope. If I want chocolate, I figure it’s better to eat it then (or soon, at least) than make myself wait for an appointed day. I’ve figured out before that if I give myself an actual “cheat” day, I will go absolutely nuts on that day to the point of making myself feel ill. I figure it’s better to eat desserts a few nights a week (or every night, if that’s how that week is going) than force myself to hold off and then overdo it.

17. Do you drink alcohol?

Yup. I don’t drink often, but I see no harm in imbibing once in a while. And the occasional glass of wine is nice with a good dinner sometimes. It’s all in good fun and I’m safe about it, so why not? I generally drink once every couple of weeks. More so around holidays (aka: next week).

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

I do! Justin is a friend of mine from class who goes to the gym with me a couple times a week. The guy could probably benchpress me, so he’s good inspiration to have around Smile

19. What is the best thing about your life that has changed since committing to a healthy lifestyle?

I wouldn’t be able to pick one thing. I went from being a chubby teenager with starvation/binge cycles to an anorexic university student desperately trying to downplay her condition so she didn’t get hospitalized or put in treatment. I am miles away from both scenarios, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Not only am I physically healthier, but I’m happier and more in tune with myself emotionally than ever before.

20. What’s the last healthy thing you did?

Baked Christmas cookies – good for emotional health. Open-mouthed smile

I’ve actually never been an eggnog person. And despite my chocoholic status, it’s been years since I’ve had hot chocolate. Although, I could take either if I could throw in a splash of Amaretto. Smile with tongue out
