Sushi Salad and Barbie Shoes.

Good morning!

So, my weekend was fabulous.

I’ve been feeling pretty stressed out lately with school, so I just needed a weekend away. We all need that self care once in a while! I headed home for the weekend and made fun plans with some pretty fabulous people. I’m feeling a lot more relaxed now, which is a good thing – this is definitely a lots-of-shit-to-do sort of week. But I do have a couple’s massage on Saturday to look forward too!

Because I was going to be gone all weekend, I headed out Friday afternoon/evening to get my grocery shopping done. I didn’t need too much, but the fridge has been restocked.

Farmer’s Market

And I figured out the meal plan for the rest of the week:

  • Monday: Kristin’s Maple Sweet Potato Hash
  • Tuesday: pork chops, rice and roasted beans
  • Wednesday: roasted chicken and veggies
  • Thursday: Buffalo chicken quesadillas (Mexican food kick still going!)
  • Friday: pizza

And then it was a stay at home and relax sort of night!

Saturday

I wasn’t leaving until late Saturday morning, so I had time for a good breakfast.

I made the drive home, and chatted with my mom for a bit before we made the trip out to Costco.

I’m pretty sure that’s the least amount of money I’ve ever spent at Costco – not bad. I made up for it in free sample though: there was Easter chocolate and Nutella involved 😀

Cream cheese and more of that gum that I love. And the coconut Oikos that I tried last week? They actually had it at Costco. Sooo…going to be eating a lot of that for the next little while!

After Costco, I headed over to the mall to meet my best friend for some catch-up and some shopping. And believe me, I shopped.

Suzy Shier had just changed locations in White Oaks Mall and was having a 40% off sale. I took advantage!

1 blouse, 2 shirts, a striped pencil skirt, and a pair of ankle boots, plus two tank tops from Sirens.

Notice how I still haven’t been able to find new jeans or pants yet…oops. It’s all Spring stuff coming out right now, so it’s hard to find long pants!

I don’t consider myself a fashionable person in the slightest, but I’m trying to get away from the jeans and tank tops that have been dominating my wardrobe since high school. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing, but I’m making an effort! Smile with tongue out

Barbie Shoes

I freakin’ love shoes. Boots, flats, heels – I have a massive collection and cannot go into a mall without at least trying on a pair. Even though I’m already pretty tall (5’7) I have a thing for platforms and stiletto heels. Nothing wrong with towering over people!

So no surprise, we wandered into town shoes.

And I am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of these shoes on my doorstop. Open-mouthed smile More money than I usually spend on shoes, but I am obsessed. Apparently for this line, Town Shoes collaborated with the makers of Barbie to recreate some of the shoes seen on the doll. My six-year-old self would be so thrilled with me right now Smile with tongue out

Now, I just need somewhere to wear them…

Dinner

For dinner, the best friend and I headed over to Earl’s. I hadn’t been there before, but it’s one of Laura’s favourite restaurants, so I was eager to check it out. The wait was a little long (we waited about 45 minutes for a table) but they gave us raspberry mojito and chili chicken samples, so I guess I can’t complain at all!

To drink, I ordered their vanilla pomegranate mojito.

It was made with vanilla Smirnoff instead of tequila, but it still had the feel of a classic mojito. So delicious!

When I see anything that relates to tuna and/or sushi on a menu, it must be ordered.

This was the Albacore Tuna Sushi Salad: organic greens, carrots, cucumber, mango, avocado, brown basmati rice, sushi rice, toasted nori and rare seared tuna with a white miso vinaigrette and sesame seeds. My plate was definitely cleared – it was amazing!

Right as we were eating, a waiter walked by and offered us tiny, warm chocolate chip cookies.

I’ll definitely be heading back there at some point – the service was excellent (free samples and the manager coming by to make sure that you’re enjoying your meal? I love that sort of thing. It makes for a great experience) and I was more than happy with my salad. And…I want to head back and check out their martini menu!

After stopping to visit another friend of ours, I headed back to my parents to relax for a bit. Biggest dilemma ever: my mom was watching Downton Abbey in one room, and my brother and his girlfriend were watching Pitch Perfect in another. I floated Smile with tongue out

Sunday was busy and full of fabulous food, but I’m going to save it for another day. Today, I’m diving headfirst back into schoolwork. Only one month left before coursework is complete!

Groceries and Meal Plans: 10/20–10/27.

Happy Sunday!

I got my paper done yesterday that I was working on as well as all my readings for next week, so I get a bit of a free day today. Fortunately the paper was only a 3-4 page-r as opposed to the 15 page paper I wrote last week, so it didn’t take me nearly as long.

I did groceries yesterday and realized I haven’t done a shopping/meal plan post in a while. So…clearly I’m doing on today. Smile

Yesterday I hit up the farmer’s market, 2 grocery stores, and WalMart (I have my main grocery store and the market, and then I check flyers for sales at other stores/WalMart. I am a bargain shopper, what can I say?)

So here’s the haul!

Proteins/Dairy/Alternatives

  • spreadable butter (I would rather eat butter than margarine, but I was sick of destroying my toast everything I time I’d try to butter it. So this will do!)
  • egg whites
  • unsweetened vanilla almond milk (I usually buy Almond Breeze, but thought I’d give Silk a try)
  • 2 portions herb and white wine salmon from the seafood counter
  • whole chicken (it’s buried back there somewhere. They had a sale on at Zehr’s for chickens at $5.00, so I was the crazy person throwing chickens around trying to find the biggest one)
  • Basa fillets
  • eggs (always go for the flat – we eat a lot of eggs here)
  • natural lunch meat – deli ham
  • unpictured cottage cheese

Produce

  • precut broccoli and cauliflower (more expensive to buy the prechopped stuff, but I really hate cutting it. I end up with little broccoli bits stuck on my counter for the next week)
  • bananas (of course)
  • red onion
  • romaine
  • baby spinach
  • frozen spinach
  • lime juice (I’ll buy real lemons, but I rarely use limes so I’d rather just buy the juice for when I need it
  • bell pepper

  • no name ketchup (that is bargain shopping at it’s best)

I tried a handful and they were really tasty!

I managed to come $10 under budget this week. Useful, because Eric and I have to do laundry this week (seriously, why are laundromats so expensive? Awful).

When I grocery shop, I shop with a meal plan in mind. I get the basics for breakfast, lunches and snacks (eggs, bread, english muffins, egg whites, stuff for salads, lunch meat, cottage cheese, yogurt, nuts, cereal, etc.) and then I plan dinners for the week. I usually plan for 5 meals, leaving two for leftovers, dinners out or quick meals (grilled cheese, anyone?)

So the meal plan for October 20th – October 27th.

  • Saturday: Wouldn’t-Believe-It’s-Healthy Lasagna
  • Sunday: salmon, brown rice and broccoli
  • Monday: roast chicken, sweet potatoes and salad
  • Tuesday: shredded BBQ chicken sandwiches
  • Wednesday: going out for dinner cause it’s my BIRTHDAY!! (can you tell I’m excited?)
  • Thursday: curried fish, brown rice and cauliflower
  • Friday: leftovers/out/wing it because that will be when we go out for the birthday!

 

Dinner

According to said meal plan, I had my favourite lasagna on the menu. Eric’s friend was coming over, so I wanted a big, easy meal that I knew was going to be tasty. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and he wasn’t able to come, but it means that Eric and I have lunches for a while. Smile

Camino dark chocolate + coconut. Definitely happiness-inducing on a Saturday night.

And I couldn’t rest knowing that yesterday’s manicure picture was subpar.

What Makes Me Happy.

Yesterday was a good day.

Nothing big happened – it was a pretty run of the mill day, actually. But, I noticed a lot of little things that made my day awesome. Smile

1. A fancy breakfast.

An egg white omelet with green onion, red pepper, turkey, goat brie and dill. A slice of toast with almond butter and maple pumpkin butter on the side. I can’t remember the last time I made an omelet for breakfast – it needs to be done more often.

 

2. I went to the gym in the morning and it was 100% empty. I had it all to myself – kind of a dream situation for me. I look at exercise as my personal time, so not having to engage in idle chatter or wait for machines was amazing. I also upped my weights on my deadlifts – yay improvements in strength!

 

3. The entire flat of eggs I picked up at the farmers market.

Eric and I eat eggs daily. So having that many in my fridge makes me extremely happy.

 

4. This squash.

5. Fancy chocolate.

6. An afternoon of baking.

Baking is quite possibly one of my favourite pasttimes. It’s relaxing and you get something delicious at the end of it – cannot go wrong. It’s Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, and I was given the task of making dessert for my family get-together Sunday. Anybody in the family reading this – look forward to Sunday. It’ll be good. Open-mouthed smile

 

7. The best part of baking.

8. A long, cuddle-y nap with Eric late in the afternoon. Yes, we are nauseatingly cute sometimes.

 

9. Making stuffed chicken for the first time in ages.

Chicken stuffed with honey baked ham and goat brie (the amount of goat brie I’ve eaten today makes me happy in itself), topped with Italian seasoning. Cauliflower and a dinner roll on the side.

 

10. Getting (almost) caught up on the new season of Glee. I was worried that with a lot of the cast leaving, the show would get lame (reminiscence of Degrassi: The Next Generation, if anyone watched that show. As soon as characters started to graduate, it became pretty unwatchable) but so far they’ve been able to keep it together.  The music’s been good and I’ve been loving Kate Hudson’s character!

All, in all – happy day. Smile
