Better With Sprinkles

The Colourful Side to Healthy Living.

Five Things Friday: 04/19/13.

Happy Friday! Despite the fact that I haven’t had classes all week, I’ve been insanely busy. I don’t really have exams in grad school, but I’m definitely weighed down with final papers/assignments. Plus, I’m trying to work on my thesis proposal AND job hunt.

So…yes. Glad it’s almost the weekend. Open-mouthed smile

Lists of things!

5 Things I’ve Eaten This Week:

1. Homemade applesauce (?)

I don’t know if I can really call it applesauce, because I let all the liquid soak up so it’s just the cooked, cinnamon-y apple pieces. Suddenly I understand what all the applesauce fuss is about (Khushboo and Amanda!). I’m pretty sure most of this stuff has been eaten directly out of the fridge with a fork. So good.

2. Annie’s Mac and Cheese with hot dogs, broccoli, and ketchup.

Note: mac and cheese of any sort must include ketchup. But, it must be squirted on top and never mixed in. Mixing the ketchup in just ruins it. Smile with tongue out

3. A turkey and hummus wrap and a cheese string, eaten for lunch at school.

Usually I arrange my schedule so that I don’t have to go to school until after lunch, or I just go home during. I kind of hate packing lunches…it’s going to suck when I have a job that requires me to actually leave my house for most of the day.

4. The wafflewich.

I’m pretty sure that this is the reason why freezer waffles exist. The best things you can do with waffles, in my humble opinion. Especially when you go for maple cinnamon waffles and throw some jam on there…sweet and savoury at it’s best.

5. Chicken tortilla soup.

I’ve never actually had chicken tortilla soup before, let alone made it. So this was a “throw-together and hope it works” sort of meal. Worked pretty well, actually – although really, it’s hard to go wrong with anything that’s topped with grated cheese, avocado and crumbled tortilla chips.

5 Things Happening This Week:

1. The first really warm day of the year (Monday) this happened.

That would be a vanilla and chocolate swirl soft serve cone with a cake batter dip. It is just as fabulous as it sounds. I made a trip with some friends to the Dairee Delite in Brantford, which is a soft-serve, seasonal, walk-up ice cream place. I knew I wanted a cone with a chocolate dip, but then I looked directly above my head and saw a list of at least 15 kinds of dip – white chocolate, peanut butter, cotton candy…but cake batter seemed like the way to go.

When I got the cone (regular size) I took one look and thought “wow! that’s really big, I should have got a child’s, I won’t be able to eat all of this!” Then I laughed at my silliness and proceeded to devour it. So.good.

2. It was 25 degrees yesterday. 25!!! It was amazing. I wore flipflops. In April. Day made, right there.

Except I will never complain about warm weather…I kind of thrive in humidity.

3. I won Vice President for my Student Council for next year!! Open-mouthed smile

And by I won…I mean I ran unopposed. But nonetheless, I am excited. Smile with tongue out

4. I’ve presenting in and volunteering at a conference on Saturday. When handing out roles for the volunteers, I was offered the role of the official “tweeter”. Umm, that is pretty much the coolest volunteer position either. You guys set up the food, I’ll sit on my computer and tweet about things Smile with tongue out Awesome.

5. Between Boston and Texas, I think we could all use some happiness next week. Still sending positive thoughts to all those who have been affected.

5 Reasons I Can Waste Hours on Buzzfeed.

1. The 40 Greatest Dog gifs of All Time.

I actually can’t even handle how cute that is. Jesus, I need a pug (so do you Caitlin!)

2. The 7 Funniest Frustrated Gordon Ramsay Memes.

Yes, it is vulgar. But it is hilarious. And my inner nerd always appreciates a Mario reference.

3. 25 Foods You’ll Never Be Able to Eat Again.

Please tell me that you remember these. And you miss them. The jalapeno cheddar flavour was amazing.

4. 26 Ridiculously Amazing Sweatshirts you Can Actually Buy.

Umm, I just posted a recipe for donuts yesterday. And the sprinkles go without saying. Clearly, I need this.

5.Peter Dinklage’s Hottest Moments as Tyrion Lannister.

He’s already the wittiest character on the show, but he’s also compassionate? I’m sold.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

<— Regular ice cream or soft serve? What would be your ideal ‘dip’ for a soft serve cone? I might have to go back and ask them if they can mix the peanut butter and chocolate varieties…

<— What’s a discontinued food that you wish still existed? The green/purple Heinz ketchups was on that list too…as gross as it looked, it was oddly compelling.

Five Things Friday: 01/03/13.

Yay Friday!

Anyone have any exciting plans this weekend? Right now, my plans involve heading to the laundromat on Sunday (ugh). So…maybe less than exciting weekend for me. But in more exciting news: It’s March! Yes, February is the shortest month, but I think we’re all ready to see it go. Now, just give me Spring!

But here’s my Friday lists:

5 Things I Ate This Week:

1. A microwaved cinnamon apple with almond butter. You can always tell when I eat a snack at home – clearly, there was more effort put into that than my usual grab and go snacks.

2. Salmon, quinoa and salad. AKA: Dinner Monday night.

3. Valentine’s sucker. That is some child-like deliciousness right there.

4. Another waffle-wich. an egg, a slice of ham, strawberry jam, and goat cheese. Must get more waffles – these are amazing.

5. Chopped all-beef hotdogs tossed in roasted red pepper and tomato soup.

One of those “crap, those have been in the fridge for a while” sort of meals. It was actually really tasty.

5 Other Happenings This Week:

1. I channeled Caitlin when I got home yesterday – she talked about taking time to relax in her post, which is something that hit home with me. I’m the type that always finds ‘something’ to do; I’m not so good at just relaxing. I have been stressing out and working really hard lately, so I knew an afternoon to just chill was necessary. Do you remember when I mentioned a few weeks ago what my favourite chick flick was?

Yup. Definitely watched Josie and the Pussycats yesterday afternoon. I promise I’m not 12 years old…

2. A few days ago, I  gave Caitlin some knee-problem advice. Apparently, I jinxed myself – I woke up Wednesday with a bit of an aching knee. I took the day off from working out Wednesday, and did an upper body + elliptical workout Thursday without problems. Depending on how it feels this morning (as I’m typing this up the night before) I’ll either hit the gym for a none-knee-stressing lower body workout, or I’ll declare it a yoga day. Between my finger and my knee, clearly not my best week as far as injuries go.

3. I gave the xanthan gum I bought a try in my smoothie yesterday.

I did see a difference in my smoothie texture – more velvety, almost. I hear that it gives it an ice cream-like texture, but I thought it was almost like Marshmallow Fluff, in a weird way. I liked it! You guys also told me to try it in baking and in sauces, so I’ll be playing around with it a bit (but only in small amounts – I was also warned that it’s not the greatest thing for digestive problems).

4. I am obsessed with Mexican food right now. Fajitas and tacos last week, and enchiladas for dinner last night.

Everything tastes better when coated in guacamole.

5. I have officially gotten my mom hooked on Downton Abbey. I put on the first episode when she and my dad came up on Family Day, and she went home and ordered them all. Now I just need her to catch up so we can complain about the season 3 finale together…

5 Things I’m Looking Forward to in March.

1. Going home next weekend! I’ve been making more of an effort to make trips home this semester, and I’ve been loving the extra friend/family time. Said trip home will include a burger date with my favourite munchkin! We’ve been talking about going to The Works, which has some of the craziest burger toppings I’ve ever seen. One option has banana slices, peanut butter and bacon as toppings, and another has kraft dinner. Yup, I am excited Smile

2. Eric and I have an hour-long couples massage booked for the 16th. Seriously counting down the days for that – I think it’s been almost two years since I had my last professional massage. So overdue.

3. Hopefully going to make a trip to hang out with and do some shopping with this girl! Seriously excited to meet Devon in person.

4. Easter! Family + food. Cannot go wrong with that.

Season 3. Need I say more?

Have a great Friday!

Five Things Friday: 22/02/13.

Happy Friday! This is the last official day of my week off of school…sigh. But nonetheless, there is definitely some great things lately!

5 Things I’ve Eaten Recently:

1. Crockpot Coq Au Vin on whole wheat egg noodles:

Not going to lie…this was not great. It was edible, but the sauce didn’t thicken up enough and a slow cooker does weird, weird things to bacon. Time in the fridge did improve it a bit though – the leftovers are more tolerable. I think I’m going to try a traditional recipe in the future though; it had possibilities!

2. Still doing my All-Bran for breakfast a few days a week: this was 1/2 cup All Bran with a bit of Nature’s Path Coconut Chia Granola, grapes and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. 2 eggs +  egg whites on the side. And that is a candle shaped like a cinnamon bun that I got for Christmas – it’s so cute that I don’t want to burn it!

3. Shrimp tacos. Seriously one of the best dinners I’ve put together in a while – I cut jumbo shrimp in half and marinated them in lime juice, salt, pepper, cilantro, and chili powder, and then sauteed them in coconut oil. Tossed into tortillas with lettuce, salsa, guacamole and sour cream – so.good.

4. A Quest Peanut Butter Cup chopped up in vanilla Greek yogurt. I’ll be reviewing Quest products in a few weeks, but I will tell you know that the cups are greatly improved when thrown in yogurt over eating them by themselves.

5. A Waffle-wich. I inspired Sara to buy waffles, she inspired me to make a sandwich with them Smile with tongue out. An egg, a bit of cheddar, a slice of shaved ham, and strawberry jam sandwiched between waffles. Awesome breakfast.

5 Teenage Music Flashbacks: (Alex, you totally inspired this one)

5 Posts that I Adored This Week:

1. After the Ivy League – I’m Not Skinny (And I Don’t Want to Be). Seriously, the best attitude regarding health and body image.

2. Lisa Lately – Be the Best Version of You. Trying to be someone else is unnecessary – just do you!

3. Peace Love and Oats – You’re Good Enough NOW. Don’t hold off on pursuing your dreams and goals; go after them now!

4. Picky Runner – What is Perfection? I’m sure a lot of relate to the type-A personality syndrome, but we don’t have to spend all our energy trying to reach some obscure level of perfection. Relax a little and take it easy on yourself!

5. Nourish and Flourish – Trustworthy Sources (and Fried Egg Wafflewiches). We sometimes put too much faith in outside sources (bloggers, the media, health professionals) to tell us the best ways to fuel our body. Really, it should be OUR bodies dictating how we approach food.

5 Things that I’m Loving this Week:

1. Guacamole. Whether I make it, order it, or buy it from the grocery store, it never fails to make me happy. So good.

2. The fact that I’ve been wearing yoga pants and tshirts all week. Comfy house clothes for the win!

3. This granola. I finally got around to opening it this week, and it will not be lasting long. Dark chocolate and red berries – yum.

4. The fact that it is March in exactly one week. Although February is the shortest month, it’s always the most depressing. Bring on Spring!

5. Waffles. I’ve been missing out the last few years.

and now I want to go out for breakfast and order the biggest Belgian waffle I can find…

Hope you have a wonderful day!
