Sunday Wine + Goal Talk-February.

Good morning! Who watched the Superbowl last night?

I…did not. The boyfriend and I don’t have cable and neither of us cared enough to venture somewhere to watch it. My parents have a get together every year, but considering that I’ll be making the trip to London Wednesday, it wasn’t worth it to me to make two back-and-forth trips in one week.

Thankfully though, there is Twitter. So I kept up on all the happenings (Alicia Keys was subpar! Beyonce was amazing! The lights went out! See? I know what went down).

And really, the Superbowl is kind of hilarious on Twitter. #justsayin

But back to yesterday.

Breakfast was one that I hadn’t had in a while…

Yogurt bowl! (I promise, yogurt was in there somewhere).

2% Greek yogurt with cinnamon, a sliced banana, blueberries, Nature’s Path Flax Plus Red Berry Crunch Cereal, and peanut butter. Delicious.

It was a fairly typical Sunday for me – a little bit of work, catching up on TV from the week, and hitting up the gym for a little while.

Dinner

Remember those steaks I bought?

Yea…those were amazing. With a simple side salad – delicious. And of course:

Dessert = wine (well, dessert part 1. The ice cream came out later). I’m not a huge drinker, but a glass of wine on a Sunday night is amazing.

Especially when you’re drinking said wine while watching Downton Abbey and receiving a foot rub. That is pure perfection right there.

But let’s see how I did for my January goals, shall we?

January Goals

1. Blog Redesign.

All I really wanted to do right now was to change the header – done and done! I seriously will still click over to my blog sometimes just so I can look at the header…it’s so pretty. Seriously, Jenny is amazing. The next stage is to switch to self-hosting and do a complete redesign, which I’m hoping to do in the summer.

sam

so pretty!

2. Learn more about photography and my camera.

While I did (finally) pick up my camera manual and glance through it, I haven’t really put a lot of time and effort into really working on my camera skills. However, my pictures do turn out a lot better in natural light, so thankfully the days are starting to get a little bit longer. And my photography-loving dad just took a photography course a few weeks ago, so I’m going to bug him to tell me about what he’s picked up.

3. Follow my nutrition plan…in a way that works for me.

So, I haven’t mentioned this nutrition plan in a while. I purchased it when I bought my current workout program…and I haven’t talked about it since. Because I’m not really following it anymore. I’ve had a couple of realizations, one being that I realized I was feeling a little too influenced by some peoples eating styles/the photos popping up on my Instagram. To be addressed in a later post!

4. Remember to take my vitamins.

I actually have gotten way better with this one…because I started taking them all at once instead of taking half of them in the morning, and half at night. It didn’t seem to make a difference in how I digested them, so it seems to be working better for me.

Not bad at all!

February Goals

1. Work on my hip mobility.

I have pretty much the worst hips ever. As in, I can’t do an overhead squat – even without added weight. My hips are just so ridiculously tight! So I want to spend some time several times a week doing some hip stretches…half pigeon and I will become very close.

2. Try to keep an eye on my grocery budget.

Lately, I’ve noticed that I’ve been going over-budget on my groceries more than I need too. I’ve gotten bad with “hey, that’s on sale – into the cart it goes!” Not cool. So I want to reign it in a bit, and try not to go over budget at all this month.

3. Figure out a solution to my digestive issues.

While I don’t talk about it too much on the blog (I’m all about sharing, but really, it’s a little TMI for the internet), my digestive system does not work the way that it should. It never really has, but it’s gotten worse over the past few months. So I’m going to make some (minor) diet tweaks to see if I can find a way to solve it. If not, I’m going to start looking into fibre supplements to see if I can get everything working properly.

4. Not letting myself stress out too much.

School-wise, I have a lot on my plate right now. The way my semester is set up, I have a lot of weekly assignments that are eating up a lot of my time (as I’m sure I’ve complained about…often), while at the same time, I’m beginning work on my MA Thesis. While I recognize that I am in grad school and am therefore supposed to be busy, it’s overwhelming at times. I’m going to do my best not to let it get me down…or make me forget that there is life outside of school and blogging!

Hopefully this won’t happen too often..but I have nothing against the occasional stress-relieving bowl of ice cream. Smile with tongue out

Here’s hoping for a good month. And I’m hoping that you have a wonderful Monday!

<— What are your goals for February?

<— Ever followed a meal plan? What did you think?

  1. A yummy looking breakfast Sam and some great recaps and goals. Your header looks so pretty so you def gave that one a big tick! I know exactly what you mean about a grocery budget, I really need to to the same. I spend way, way too much on products. I don’t follow meal plans because I don’t like to fall into restrictive ways of eating. I like to eat a varied diet and what I want, when I want. Ok, it might not work all of the time but it is pretty good and easy for the people around me too!

  2. I love yogurt bowls and nut butter, why have I never thought to put them together?! I am a new blog reader of yours and hadn’t seen your January goals. Wanted to comment that I think eating in a way that works for you is key! Try not to let what others do/don’t eat influence you! I really need to work on my grocery spending!

  3. I am the exact same way with food and grocery shoppping haha. I looked in my freezer when I got home from TJs on Saturday and decided that the only thing I’m allowed to buy next weekend is fresh vegetables…I have ridiculous amount of frozen leftovers (since I refuse to throw anything out) so it’s time to make a dent in that! I’m really glad that you realized so quickly that you were being influenced by others with that meal plan and stopped…that’s huge lovely 🙂 The only time I’ve been on a meal plan was in WPIC for treatment…hated that damn thing ha and have avoided them like the plague since (I totally understand why I was on it in the first place obviously and am grateful that it got me back on track…but yeah hated having to eat the same number of things every day…drove me nuts and made me way too focused on numbers and whatnot)….and my goals for February are to work on sleep (not going so well already), make it yoga at least once a week, keep hitting 1-2 rest days per week, and ENJOY every moment to the best of my ability 🙂

    • Yes, at that point it’s necessary (I was on one for ED recovery as well) but now I need to remember that I know my body best and how it works, so I really only need to listen to my body’s signals.

      Great goals for sure!

  4. Great goals, Sam…and although you don’t plan on self-hosting till summer, my biggest tip is to pay someone to help you out if you’re not 100% computer-proficient! There’s a LOT of technical jargon and one look at it made my head spin- getting someone else to help in the process was so worth it!

I love what you said about not trying to emulate other people’s eating habits- so true! Although I have in the past, I can’t say I necessarily regret doing so because it’s been a learning process. Through plenty of trial and error, I’ve finally found a way of eating that works for me in and maybe that will change 10 months down the line but for now, I’m happy with it :)!

    • Exactly how I’m trying to see it – I tried a different style, it didn’t work, so back to the drawing board. 🙂

And I absolutely will get someone to do it for me. I’m not completely computer-illiterate, but I do not trust myself with that!

  5. I’m obsessed with your new header. It makes me so hungry! I’m looking into self-hosting this summer too!
Hip opening is a great goal too!
As for the superbowl, I had it on TV, but I was watching twitter more than the game. It was far more interesting.
Sending some happy thoughts and healing for you tummy troubles and your new diet plan! I can’t wait to hear more ab your thoughts on seeing others’ pics. Its something that bothers me too (and am quite possibly guilty of adding to). Happy Monday!!!
    have a great one 🙂

  6. I have to start out by saying that I totally approve of your yogurt mess breakfast 🙂 And I went over to my parents’ place to watch the game, but in reality only spent about 15 minutes actually paying attention. Us Canadians are just not football people.

Anywho, I’m really interested to hear what you thought about your meal plan. I had to follow a few different ones when I was trying to gain weight in recovery, and I think I developed a big distaste for them. I don’t like the idea of -having- to eat a specific thing, a specific amount, or a specific way… I prefer to just go with the flow. And I think that’s actually one of the reasons that I can’t do weekly meal plans… I like to be able to feel like I can honor my cravings whenever they pop up.

  7. I watched the commercials last night, and the halftime show…and some of the end 🙂 Thats about it! I also approve of your breakfast, the best meals I believe are the ones just thrown together! ha

  8. Your header is awesome! I’d say that goal was for sure accomplished. I’m looking into self-hosting this summer too!!! I guess I’m not the only one haha I don’t have cable either so I wasn’t watching it. I “watched” it on twitter but I did watch the halftime show on my computer since it was life streaming. I’ll be waiting for those thoughts on the nutrition plan and seeing other people post their foods. I agree- it can be triggering but most of the time it just looks gross to me because I’m so picky haha

  9. I didn’t watch the super bowl either… haha oops! The boyfriend was here and we were watching The Notebook instead – it never gets old 😉 I did youtube beyonce’s performance though because I heard it was amazing, and it was! I definitely suggest looking it up! I have IBS, so I know what you’re going through with digestive issues. I started taking digestive enzymes recently, and I feel like they have helped 🙂

  10. I had digestive issues at the end of last year and it was helpful to go see a doctor. Come to find out I was eating too many eggs a week. Eggs affect the gallbladder which could suppress the other GI organs. Check it out! Hope you feel better!

  11. Mmmm, I always count wine as a “partial dessert”, I usually need something I can sink my teeth into also though! Oh the ever fun grocery debate, I usually try to justify it as “I need food, it’s ok if I spend $$ on it”. Have a fabulous week!

  12. I was at a Super Bowl party yet didn’t watch a single moment of the game OR commercials. Just the halftime show. I don’t know many people who manged that 😛 but I certainly did. I was too busy hanging out with friends and family and taking pictures of all the food!
You did a great job with your goals, Sam. I loooove your blog header, trust me from someone who recently did a blog overhaul it takes a LOT of effort and patience to just bite the bullet and make the change. I can’t get over how professional this site looks!
That steak dinner looks incredible. But for me steak would having me crave a big, bold spicy red!

    • I’m glad you love it Caitlin! I do agree that it looks more professional now. I’m just holding off on the overhaul until I can afford it (/hopefully have more viewers by then, making it more justifiable)

And bubbly white is pretty much the opposite of what you drink with a steak…but that’s way i waited until afterwards to break it open :-p

  13. Digestive troubles are like my middle name so I hope you find something that works. I don’t do instagram for that reason, i think the blog world is enough of an influence (good and bad) that I need to limit social media at some point.

  14. That does look like a lovely b-fast!

I didn’t watch the superbowl really at all either–but I did know about the big happenings thanks to the hubs & social media. Hah.

I love the idea of improving hip mobility–good goal!

  15. Magnesium glycinate will solve all your GI problems 🙂 It’s a lifesaver!!! Take 100-300mg before bed! I know you’re a grad student, so go and research it and see for yourself 🙂

  16. Nice job on your goals – especially the blog redesign. Your new header is so nice! Also I’m really happy for you that you had that realization about your eating plan. It’s crazy how blogs can influence us in little ways, even when we think we’re not the type of people to fall into that trap. It happens to me sometimes too. 😛

I’ve never followed a meal plan before because I’m too stubborn and I don’t like other people telling me what to eat lol.

I really should decrease my grocery budget too. I’m somehow spending like $75-100 per week on just myself! It’s ridiculous! My other goals for this month are to save most of the money I make from work, do my physio exercises every day, and rock my internship interviews!

  17. Hiya Sam, I’ve been reading for a while but never left a comment 🙂 I think its time, because I’ve been loving your posts and the new layout is fab!
